Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
