Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to pickup every little thing he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse feedback from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning was not a common outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. Phil states that he is learning every single day and is quite humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes blunders every single game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
