Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/low provides an amazing range of betting choices and because you have several players shooting for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low.
