Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming range of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, and several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
