The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly wager against each other. Howard had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
